Perioral Dermatitis

Perioral dermatitis is most common for women and rarely affects men. This form of dermatitis is described as patches of itchy and red spots that appear most commonly around the mouth and nose. The skin on the chin, upper lip and cheeks and around the nose can become red, brittle, dry and flaky. Sometimes women may also experience patches of dry and irritated skin around the eyes as well.

Several factors or causes have been related to perioral dermatitis. Oily skin is sometimes a common characteristic for patients with this form of eczema. Poor hygiene maintenance, such as neglecting to regularly wash the face, can contribute to this skin disorder. Too many applications of face creams without washing the face regularly can also cause breakouts of this type of dermatitis.

Treatment for perioral dermatitis can actually be quite effective. First, it is recommended that you try to recognize the possible source of the infection and discontinue using any products that may be contributing to the breakouts. It is also suggested that you only wash with warm water when you have this rash-like condition.

Oral Alternatives for Perioral Dermatitis
There are some oral medications prescribed by doctors for this form of dermatitis. Some of them are antibiotics. Other oral solutions include all-natural capsules to attack the causes internally. Sometimes the hormones can become imbalanced as a result of taking oral contraceptives, and some herbal remedies will help to bring that balance back.
