Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis is a type of eczema commonly found in both adults and infants. Signs of this type of dermatitis are swollen and red patches on the skin, or, in some cases, scaly brown patches. Some people experience this form of eczema on the scalp and also around the mouth and nose.

The cause of seborrheic dermatitis is really unknown. The most common type of this dermatitis for infants is called the cradle cap. It is when scaly or crusty rashes appear on the scalp, but it can also spread to the face and neck. Babies can also experience the seborrheic form of eczema around the lower parts of the body, resembling diaper rash. Infants who experience this skin disorder usually are healed within weeks or months.

Seborrheic dermatitis for adults can affect the scalp, eyelids, face and body. For women, it tends to appear around the mouth and nose areas of the face. When cases become severe, lesions can appear on the skin as well. Extreme cold weather can worsen the signs of this form of dermatitis.
